Hernando Symphony Orchestra presents ‘Sounds of the Season’
BROOKSVILLE — With just two weekends left to finish up holiday shopping before Christmas, malls and shopping plazas are filled with cars and people, packed like sardines. What better way to end the hustle with some relaxation at a concert featuring holiday favorites?
The Hernando Symphony Orchestra will provide just that when it presents “Sounds of the Season” Dec. 22 and 23 at Central High School Theater — just in time for Christmas.
“Avoid the nonsense in the stores, and come relax with us,” said orchestra conductor Michele DiLuzio.
The concert will feature a variety of holiday tunes, opening with Christmas Spectacular, a medley with a ton of carols performed in different styles and variations.
There will be quite a few new selections of music, made possible by the orchestra’s Gift of Giving program. Not only does the program help the orchestra purchase new music, but it also gives patrons a stake in their orchestra as their names are attached to the music they donate.
New selections include Hannukah Collage, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Celtic Carol, All I Want for Christmas is You and Cowboy Christmas.
“Cowboy Christmas is a medley of carols with a western twist,” DiLuzio said. “There are whip cracks, horse whinnies and western sounds, in a very nontraditional setting. It is a fun piece. (The musicians) absolutely love it.”
DiLuzio also has several favorites returning, pieces the orchestra has not performed in years — White Christmas and Christmas Collage.
The holiday concert will include a special segment for children, which will lead into the Frozen piece. Other selections include Sleigh Ride and the Christmas Finale sing-along.
“My task at Christmas is to find pieces that are in nontraditional settings,” DiLuzio said.
While this concert features many new selections, patrons are in for a treat for February’s Spectrum concert and April’s Kaleidoscope concert, DiLuzio said. All pieces performed in those concerts will be new purchases from the Gift of Music, with the exception of the Phantom of the Opera in the Kaleidoscope concert.
Also, starting this season, the orchestra no longer performs a Friday evening concert. Shows include a Saturday evening and a Sunday matinee.
