TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Outgoing Florida Gov. Rick Scott has chosen to appoint Andrew Pollack, the father of a teenager killed during the Parkland school shooting, to the state’s education board.

  • Andrew Pollack has become outspoken school safety advocate
  • Appointment was among almost 80 made by departing governor

Scott announced almost 80 appointments to various state boards Friday, just as he’s about to leave the governor’s office.

The state Board of Education sets education policy and hires the state’s education commissioner.

Gov.-Elect Ron DeSantis has the power to withdraw most of those last-minute appointments.

Pollack’s daughter, Meadow, was among the 17 people killed last year in a Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Pollack has been an outspoken critic of how Broward County school officials and Sheriff’s deputies have dealt with shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz before the shooting. He’s become a school safety advocate, speaking openly at many of the MSD Public Safety Commission meetings.

DeSantis recently tapped Richard Corcoran to serve as education commissioner. The Republican just finished a term as Florida House speaker.
