At the rate we’re going, we may never again get another Phish show in Tampa Bay.
But by the time they do come back — if they ever do — at least we’ll have gotten full shows by all four members.
Phish singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio has announced he’s bringing his Trey Anastasio Band to town for the first time. They’ll play Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on May 28, in what’ll be something of a warm-up to Phish’s headlining slot at Bonnaroo in June. Ticket prices haven’t been announced, but they’ll go on sale at 11 a.m. Friday. Click here for details.
While Phish hasn’t played Tampa bay since a 1995 date at the Yuengling Center (then called the USF Sun Dome), all four members have made their way back with various projects. Drummer Jon Fishman has brought a couple of projects to town, most recently his Jazz Mandolin Project in 2004. Keyboardist Page McConnell and members of the Meters co-headlined the 2013 Gasparilla Music Festival in Tampa. Bassist Mike Gordon played last year’s Sunshine Music Festival in St. Petersburg. And frontman Anastasio is coming in May.
So will we ever see another Phish show in town?
“The simple fact of the matter is, Phish just doesn’t play as much,” Gordon told us last year. “We play for more people and less time, and it’s mostly major markets. We just can’t go everywhere. People have their other lives, their other creative work and families. We’re able to do Phish in less time and have as much fun with it. So we just don’t hit a lot of places.”
At least we still see them solo.
