TAMPA — Employees at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC arrived to work early Sunday to find a dead body on the grounds. Authorities are investigating.
It began as a normal Sunday morning at the community center, located at 522 N Howard Ave. A few dozen members filtered into the JCC to begin their early morning workouts. Staffers at the facility’s Mezrah Aquatic center started their morning routine, which includes readying the facility’s pools for guests.
When the employees lifted the tarp that covers the aquatic center’s 25-yard competitive pool at about 7 a.m., they discovered the dead body of a young woman.
The body showed “no obvious signs of foul play,” Ubinas said. But authorities have not ruled anything out: the death could have been a homicide, a suicide or an accident.
The woman appeared to have drowned to death, but that too is still under investigation, Ubinas said.
The victim, whom police have not identified, would have had to traverse the two fences that line the aquatic center in order to get into the pool, noted Heidi Shimberg, the executive director of Tampa JCCs.
The employees who discovered the body were sent home, and the JCC is offering them counseling services if they need them, Shimberg said.
“We’re just a community trying to support one another,” Shimberg said. “…Our heart goes out to this woman’s family.”
The aquatic center is closed until further notice.
