TAMPA — A 29-year-old man accused of physically abusing a newborn who woke him up this past weekend now faces a charge of first-degree murder, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

That’s because the 2-week-old baby died Tuesday of injuries suffered in the incident.

Aaron James Bordelon remains in the county jail, where he has been held since his arrest Monday.

He told sheriff’s investigators he became agitated Sunday when the infant — then 16-days olds — woke him up soon after being fed. He picked up the baby “forcefully,” deputies said he told them, and that the injuries that followed were “my fault.”

After the incident, Bordelon said he noticed the infant’s breathing grew slower and that there were bruises under the child’s eyes and on the eyelids. However, he did not call 911.

Instead, the Sheriff’s Office said when the child’s mother returned home, they took the child to Brandon Regional Hospital using a rideshare service.

Bordelon also faces charges of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect. He is being held without bail.
