It’s pretty difficult to have watched the last season of Game of Thrones and concluded that the power-hungry thirst of Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen is anything but horrifying, especially since her dragon literally roasts an entire city filled with millions of innocent people.
But apparently Marco Rubio and his staff thinks this fictional war crime is a really “hip” way to threaten Iran.
Yesterday, Rubio was questioned by reporters about his thoughts on President Trump repeatedly beating the drums of war with Iran, and Florida’s senior senator responded by saying Trump will basically burn everyone alive. “It’s a very simple equation. If Iran doesn’t attack, there won’t be any problem. If Iran attacks, the president is going to go dracarys on them,” said Rubio.
“Dracarys,” of course, is the command Daenerys uses in the show to tell her giant reptiles to brutally scorch her victims.
But rather than tell their boss that perhaps this is a really shitty comparison for an actual human president, Rubio’s staff then tweeted about how cool he is for knowing pop-culture references.

“My (almost) 48 year old boss is more ‘hip’ than me…” tweeted Rubio’s Deputy Press Secretary Justine Sanders, citing a newsletter that actually rips Rubio for bragging about genocide.
The only explanation here is that no one from Rubio’s camp has actually watchedGame of Thrones, because it’s pretty astonishing that a politician and his staff could’ve sat through last season, with all the dead bodies turning to ash, and somehow come to the conclusion: “Let’s do that to real people.”
But then again, this absolute total obliviousness is from the same guy who just wants to watch football and not be reminded of the world he helped burn.
